Where is the edge of the universe? This is a philosophical and scientific question that has puzzled man for centuries. The Bible does not give us a specific measure of how big the universe is, and before the advent of modern astronomy and its techniques and equipment, man did not understand some of the things we do today. However, even with the latest technology such as the James Webb telescope, our understanding is limited. In fact, the James Webb telescope is providing evidence that contradicts the big bang model of the universe. Scientists who deny the Bible are being forced to come up with new rescuing devices to prop up their theory because they will not admit that the Bible is correct. The Bible is not a science textbook, but it is scientifically accurate. Its main purpose is spiritual, not scientific. It does not give every detail about everything because that would make it impossibly long. The apostle John said about the works of Jesus Christ, “And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen (Jn 21:25)”. Evolutionists like to ridicule the belief in the Genesis account of creation by calling it the “God of the gaps” view. This means that they accuse young earth creationists of just inserting God into places where current scientific knowledge does not explain things. Yet this is hypocritical, because they do the same thing with hypotheses that they make up out of whole cloth to fill in the gaps in their beliefs.
This is also true regarding the edge of the universe. The evidence we have today indicates that the universe is expanding. This seems to fit how the Bible describes it as God continually stretching out the heavens (Job 26:7, Is 40:22, Is 44:24, Zech 12:1). Some believe that space itself is expanding. We don’t know how big the universe is. We can only estimate how big the visible universe is. This all leads to puzzling questions about the edge of the universe. Does it even have an edge? If so, what happens there? Is there more space beyond it? If not, what is the universe expanding into? These are questions we can only theorize about based on our limited ability to observe and understand what we are observing. We cannot comprehend infinity because it is so far beyond our experience. The same can be said of eternity. These things belong to the realm of God. “The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law (Deut 29:29).” We can explore and learn about God through His creation (Ps 19:1, Ps 97:6, Rom 1:20), which is what most of the founders of the branches of modern science believed, but there are some things that science cannot explain. Science has its limits, and man has his limits.
This brings us to an interesting passage. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this (Is 9:6-7).” This a prophecy given by Isaiah about 700 years before Christ about Him. The phrase “Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end” says that when Jesus returns and sets up His literal kingdom on earth, it will never cease increasing. We must understand that He is God manifested in the flesh (Jn 1:1-14, Jn 14:7-11, 1Cor 5:19, Col 2:9, 1Tim 3:16). There are several aspects to His kingdom, but this passage is talking about His personal reign on the earth, which is yet to come (Rev 20-22). Strong’s Concordance says the word government here means empire. Gesenius says it means dominion. Strong says the word increase means “properly, increasing; as noun, greatness, or (adverbially) greatly:—great, increase”. Gesenius says that in the verse it specifically means “multiplication, increase”. How is it that His dominion will never cease to expand? Perhaps we will understand it better after He comes. For now, we can understand that His kingdom is limitless in time and space. He created time and space. He is eternal and infinite. He is the uncaused first cause. Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity seems strange to us because it describes things that we don’t really experience in our daily lives in time on this small part of God’s creation. The apostle John had great revelation about the coming kingdom of the Lord on the earth which he describes in the book of Revelation. Yet even there, he is told that some things were not to be written about (Rev 10:4), as was Paul (2Cor 12:4). John also said, “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is (1Jn 3:2)”. What we can know now is that what the Bible does tell us is enough to want to be part of it, especially in contrast to the alternative.
