Cancel culture

Society today is in a culture war. This is nothing new. God created the first culture in the garden of Eden (Gen 1-2). It was based on His authority expressed through His word and the only human institution at that point was marriage between one man and one woman. God gave them a simple choice between obeying His word and enjoying the benefits of that choice, or disobedience which would result in death. They chose to listen to the serpent who beguiled Eve into ignoring the word of God and choosing to be her own determiner of good and evil. This has been the conflict in the world ever since. We choose between the word of God and making our own decisions on what is right and wrong.

Today, there is a term to describe those on the left who seek to silence those on the right. It is called cancel culture. This is not to say there has never been an effort the other way around, but by and large, especially now, the left attempts to silence conservatives by getting them cancelled. There are numerous examples of this. This is different than disagreement or even boycotting. This is the attempt to get disagreeing voices completely shut down and silenced. This is avoiding debate by simply shouting down into oblivion any other viewpoint. In logic, there is a term called “ad hominim”. This means that instead of making valid, logical points to validate your position, and in turn exposing flaws of others’, you just attack the person instead of the argument.Today, we see groups who show up at events and just keep disrupting and yelling to silence the voice they disagree with. They yell vulgarities and insults or just even make unintelligible noise so the speaker cannot be heard. This is to cover up the fact they don’t have a solid statement to make. They put pressure on companies to fire people, stop financial support, cancel advertising, and cancel presentations. They do not want to engage in honest discussion because they don’t have anything honest to say. They know the facts are against them, so they just use anger and emotional outbursts to try to drown out anyone who does not follow their “party line”. They are hypocrites because they accuse those they seek to cancel of hate, fascism, and oppression while hating and attempting to silence those they disagree with. This is also nothing new. That is what sinners have been doing to the voice of God since the beginning.

The serpent convinced Eve to ignore the word of God. The Old Testament prophets were mostly silenced through murder (Mt 23:29-32, Acts 7:52). Jesus literally said they killed them from A to Z (from Abel (Gen 4) to Zechariah (2Chr 24) – Mt 23:32). If they were not killed, they were mostly ignored and persecuted. The other thing they did was only listen to false prophets (Is 30:9-14). “That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD: Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits: Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us. Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon: Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall…” This is also prophesied to be the case in the last days. “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables (2Tim 4:3-4).” Is there a sign being fulfilled more clearly than this?

Ahab was a very wicked king of Israel who reigned in the north while good king Jehoshaphat reigned in the south. They went to war with Syria (1Ki 22). Jehoshaphat was wise enough to ask council from a prophet before going. Ahab brought all his false prophets who told him God would give him victory. Jehoshaphat obviously was not convinced and asked if there was another prophet of the Lord. Ahab said there was, but he hated him because he always prophesied evil about him. Nevertheless, at Jehoshaphat’s insistence, Micaiah was brought. At first, he told Ahab what he wanted to hear; but even Ahab knew that was what he was doing. Then Micaiah said he had a vision of God which showed him that Ahab would die in the battle, and that there was a lying spirit in all of his prophets. Instead of taking the warning, Ahab had Micaiah imprisoned. Jeremiah was also imprisoned for preaching the truth and calling the people to repentance (Jer 37-38). They killed Jesus, and according to history all of the apostles except John were murdered (Mt 10:24-33, Mt 24:9, Jn 16:2).

What cancel culture fails to understand is that they cannot kill God or silence Him. They have tried to pervert the Bible for centuries. Today, they try to cancel Him and anyone who speaks the truth. They will ultimately fail like their predecessors, and the truth will continue forever. “For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations (Ps 100:5). One day the Lord will return and there is no stopping Him (Ps 2, Rev 19). They may be able to temporarily silence a man, but they will never escape the word of God (Rev 20:11-15). It is far better to humble ourselves now, repent of our sins, obey the gospel (Acts 2:28), and be saved. “And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder (Mt 21:44).”
